When my son was young (I think he was 9 or 10) he started spontaneously building these little houses from found materials around our yard. Each consisted of a circular bed of crushed stone from our driveway and various bits of plant material woven and stacked to form a hollow dome.He called them Spirit Houses, and I suddenly understood the inspiration behind them. He’d been watching a lot of Hayao Miyazaki films and become completely fascinated with idea of an unseen world of spirits and ghosts.
He told me the houses would give these creatures a place to rest before moving elsewhere, like little wayside hotels. He informed me that “they travel a lot.”
